Marco pulled the trigger. Reverend Jones went down. The CD player clicked. “We’re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion.”

He shoved the CD player off the table and turned the player off, but that song kept playing. He covered his ears. “Turn it off!”

Marco sat up in bed in a cold sweat. Steel bird claws exploded through his window, seized his legs, and pulled him between the sharp glass teeth remaining in the gaping maw, into the night. He screamed and shook his head. He had to awaken from this new twist in his recurring nightmare. Usually he “awoke” only for his CD player to start playing that hideous song.

The blood rushed to Marco’s head. Not dreaming. He was really awake this time. He opened his eyes. His roof spun further and further away. He scrunched his chin into his chest and visually followed the metal claws up to the Avenging Eagle. He focused on his nemesis to convince his stomach not to regurgitate its contents.

Through a loudspeaker on the Avenging Eagle, the Emerald Avenger shouted, “I changed my mind! Tonight you die, Marco.”

The Avenging Eagle loosed Marco in an alley. He smashed hard against the wall, slid down, smashed into a trash can, and crumbled in a heap of used kitty litter. Green sparkles devoured the world. He fought against it.

Guns lowered from the Avenging Eagle’s belly. Marco closed his eyes and awaited the shot that would end his earthly torment.

Arms scooped him up as the guns fired off hundreds of rounds. The air whooshed by him. “Heaven?”

“Hardly!”

Marco opened his eyes. Powerhouse carried him like a baby.

Powerhouse dropped him off near a cab. “Get in.”

“But these cabbies will kill you.”

Powerhouse glanced up at the Avenging Eagle. “If you prefer the Emerald Avenger . . . .”

Marco jumped in the cab. Powerhouse chased after the Avenging Eagle.
